Abo, Salinas Pueblo Mission, New Mexico. In the Salinas basin stand the weathered ruins of three Puebloan villages and the Spanish colonial missions that make up Salinas National Monument. From about A.D. 1000 to the 1600s, the Puebloan communities of Abó, Quarai, and Gran Quivira (also known as Las Humanas) operated as major centers of trade. Gran Quivira, the largest of the Salinas pueblos, with a population of around 3,000.
The pueblos were abandoned in the late 1600's because of famine and constant raids by Apache.
