jlsphotography > San Antonio de Padua was founded in July of 1771 and is the third mission in the chain of the El Camino Real. It fell into ruin after the Secularization of 1834, and restoration was begun in 1903. The work was destroyed in the earthquake of 1906, and the mission had to be reconstructed.

jlsphotography > Founded in 1770, Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo was the second mission in the chain. This mission building was put up in 1782. Father Serra directed operation of the entire mission chain from here for 14 years. It fell into serious disrepair in the 1850's and wasn't restored until the 1930's. It was named a minor basilica by Pope John XXIII in 1961.
