jlsphotography > Bumpass Hell thermal vents, Lassen Volcanic National Park. Kendall Vanhook Bumpass found this area in 1864. A year later he was guiding a party through the area when he broke through a hot springs crust and was severely burned, an injury that resulted in the loss of one of his legs. A later report in a local newpaper read, "If our guide had been a profane man I think he would have cursed a little, as it was... his silence was owing to his inability to do the subject justice." The highest water temperature recorded here was 322 degrees fahrenheit. The vents also release large quantities of hydrogen sulfide.
