jlsphotography > Arizona memorial, Pearl Harbor, Oahu.

jlsphotography > Sunken hull of the Arizona as seen from the memorial. At approximately 8:10 am on December 7, 1941, the USS Arizona exploded, having been hit by a 1,760 pound armor-piercing bomb that slammed through her deck and ignited her forward ammunition magazine. In less than nine minutes, she sank with 1,177 of her crew. The majority are still entombed inside.

jlsphotography > USS Missouri, docked at Pearl Harbor. Missouri was the site of Japan's official surrender to the United States and the end of World War II. Surrender signed on the 01 deck of the Missouri on September 2, 1945.

jlsphotography > Detail of the Missouri's 16"/50 Mark 7 Guns. They fired the "super-heavy" 2,700 pound APC Mark 8 shell. Each gun could fire two of these shells per minute, and they had a range of 21 miles.

jlsphotography > Spouting Horn, Kauai. This is a blow hole in a lava bench. When the waves crash in, water is forced up through the hole. It is unique to other such blowholes on the island because it is accompanied by a smaller hole that only has air forced through it, creating a moaning sound.

jlsphotography > Devastation Trail, Volcano National Park, Hawai'i. In 1959 and eruption of Kilauea Iki turned this section of forest into a field of ash. The forest is slowly growing back.

jlsphotography > Pu'uhonau o Honaunau, area of refuge, Hawai'i. The reconstructed hut is called Hale-o-Keawe. According to the native Kapu religion, breaking any law was punishable by death. It was believed that lawbreakers offended the gods, who sent tidal waves, lava flows and earthquakes to punish them, so Hawai'ians were motivated to deal with lawbreakers quickly. However, if the guilty party could reach this area without being caught, he could perform certain rituals and be forgiven. Why lawbreakers weren't just brought here for the rituals to begin with... who knows?
